Jobsian Moments

One of the things we talk about a lot at Psonar is "Jobsian Moments" and we're always aspiring to have more of them. Its one of the guiding philosophies of the company - whenever we're struggling to find a way through the problem-du-jour Martin can always be relied upon to dig out his favourite book and read us this quote:

When you start looking at a problem and it seems really simple, with simple solutions, you don't really understand the complexity of the problem. Your solutions are way over-simplified. Then you get into the problem and you see that it's really complicated and you come up with all these convoluted solutions. That's sort of the middle and that's where most people stop and the solutions tend to work for a while. But the really great person will keep on going and find the key, the underlying principle of the problem. And comes up with an elegant, really beautiful solution that works.

It never fails to inspire the team to push on and reach that "Jobsian Moment" when there's no need to debate the alternatives any more because the right and beautiful answer is scrawled on the white board in front of us all.
